Freedom on the agenda this year

At BSFF, we celebrate sharing, differences and meeting others. A whole raft of fine values that we've always tried to instil in our festival. And when we see that world politics is marked by a retreat from democracy and the trampling of our fundamental rights, it puts us in a real tizzy.

Convinced that culture is a space for expression and resistance against these trends, the BSFF team has decided to place this 28th edition under the banner of Freedoms: the freedom to be oneself, to move around, to control one's body, to express oneself, to love, to live... all essential rights that we will be celebrating through an eclectic and committed programme.

It's against this backdrop that we've commissioned Rafaelle Fillastre, illustrator, film-maker and artistic director, to design our poster. Her thinking revolves around queer activism, feminism and mental health, often all intertwined. She has worked with a number of distribution platforms, including Violette and Co, Queer Ranch, Konbini, Queer on the move, éditions fier-es and now for the Brussels Short Film Festival.

The poster is inspired by the central theme of this 28th edition, Freedom. At the heart of this vision is a figure in motion, running forward with determination, symbolising vital momentum and self-assertion. This dynamic gesture captures the essence of freedom: a resolute choice to progress and surpass oneself. The flower tattoos that adorn the character's skin embody the freedom to be oneself and creative self-expression, while celebrating diversity. The poetic and energetic design invites us to reflect on the many forms that freedom can take, while recalling the BSFF's colourful springtime character.
